Why I Made Copper Odyssey

First, thank you to all who have downloaded, tried, or completed Copper Odyssey. You may have your own conclusions about it, but the overall thing I've been hearing is that it is imaginative, immersive, and interesting, regarding the world within it. These things are never created at random, so I thought it'd be nice to write how this all came to be in the first place, and what my motivation was. This is a Reading Post, so if that's not the kind of thing you are into then it is fine for you to watch a movie or play a game instead...those are things I do. But maybe if I were in your shoes I'd read this.

A few years ago, I was new to printmaking and I found myself within the major because a guy, now a friend, said It'd be more fitting to take this route instead of majoring in Illustration. I had been looking for ways to get out of the idea of Illustration, but I did not know an alternative -- I did not know about Printmaking. Once I was reminded of it, I wanted to start getting into it as soon as I could. I am not sure what it was, but the technician, now a friend, took trust in me to monitor the entire studio during the summer....

I had not known a thing about Printmaking,

Maybe I was chosen because I was one of the only people willing to do such a thing? I forgot how the interaction played out, but that was my job and now I was the Monitor.

"...he gave me all the keys to the building..." I told my friend. In situations like these you can really only tell yourself you will do your best and you have to pay attention to the people who come in who already know what they're doing. All some people need is a very nice voice to reaffirm their actions and I think in a sense, that is what a Monitor is there for as well.

Maybe you have come to the conclusion that this is similar to the beginning of Copper Odyssey. I don't expect that many people have also suddenly become Monitors in their lifetime, but in Copper Odyssey that is what must happen to you. Oh well! Of course in Copper Odyssey it is a bit different since there are materials and people trying to kill you yadda yadda, but it is similar experience trust me! Many silly things happen on the job.

Now we will timeskip 3 years into the future...I have been a Printmaker and a Monitor for 3 years (?). There was an art meeting of sorts, a critique of sorts, where we were talking about projects we might want to do in the future. I proposed a larger drawing of course. (Here is the artwork I normally do, by the way), The technician who is also a master critic, now my friend, suggested something.

"CAM, hahaha, maybe, besides a drawing, you can also do a secret project of sorts. Something that is not a drawing hahaha. It'll be secret."

Welcome to the secret! Copper Odyssey was the secret, and welcome to the gift, the gift was the secret and the secret was the game.
The time spent working on this was a bit mixed, but I'll settle on a year and a half that was spent developing this. Why a Game?
The thing is, Printmaking is quite niche, I'd say. Sorry if that offends anyone by me saying that, but it is a niche and old craft. But there are too many cool things within it that I'm surprised I had never heard of before, and there are many cool little processes in it. It's really like art chemistry at times, and it is scientific in its methods. Things like cooking, truck driving, and coach management had their own simulators or games...so why not make a Printmaking Simulator? You may laugh, as I would not call Copper Odyssey a "printmaking simulator", but truly, this is how the concept was in my head as I was making it.

The characters used in this were from small comics I would put around the Printmaking building, as many students, and myself, thought it was quite dark and dull...it is a bit of a sad place but all the metals and whatnot, they soak into caramel and arabic and they just become this sort of dull thing. It is a nature that I could not see being changed but welcome to the gift, the gift is a print studio. I made these comics and spread them around the building to help teach people how to use the machines.

So yeah, they're based off of these comics. The writing within Copper Odyssey really just sculpted itself, and most of the stuff in there is stuff I may say or think. I think that is it! I forgot what train I was on hahahah. If I knew Copper Odyssey was going to be a game people paid attention to, I would've maybe tried a different program... the foundation Copper Odyssey was built on is not too strong, but I really just wanted to focus on something simple and I believe Copper Odyssey is quite simple. That is it! Thank you for reading if you did. Feel free to also buy it on Steam!
